Stay Covered On And Off The Job Site
Carpentry is hands-on work across constantly changing sites, and a single incident, a client injured by a dropped tool, a severed cable during post-hole digging, structural failure in installed work, can turn into a claim running into tens of thousands of dollars.
Coverscope arranges cover for carpenters and joiners across residential, commercial and subcontract work, built around what builders, sites and contractor management systems actually require before you’re allowed to start. If you’re doing substantial custom joinery or installation work, our Contract Works Insurance page covers protection for the work itself while it’s still in progress, separate from the covers below.
What Does Carpenters Insurance Cover?
The most commonly included cover sections are as follows:
- Public Liability: Covers injury or property damage caused by your work, most sites won’t let you start without proof of it.
- Products Liability: Covers a claim linked to work you’ve completed, such as structural failure in an installed item.
- Tools and Equipment: Covers theft, loss or accidental damage to your tools, not general wear and tear.
- Commercial Vehicle: Covers utes and vans used for work, accidents, theft or damage.
- Professional Indemnity: Relevant if you provide design input or site supervision, separate from the physical work itself.
- Personal Accident and Illness: Replaces income if you’re unable to work due to injury or illness, particularly relevant for sole traders without workers compensation to fall back on.
Who Needs Carpenters Insurance?
- Sole trader and subcontractor carpenters
- Joiners and custom cabinetry makers
- Carpentry businesses employing staff
- Businesses working across residential, commercial and renovation projects
- Carpenters providing design input or site supervision alongside physical work

Contractor Portals Check Your Certificate Automatically, Before You Set Foot On Site
Larger builders, Tier 1 contractors and major property or mining companies increasingly use contractor prequalification platforms like Cm3, Pegasus, Felix or Avetta, which verify your public liability limit automatically against what the site requires. If your certificate shows a lower limit than the portal expects, site access can be delayed or rejected outright, before you’ve even arrived, and before anyone’s had a manual conversation with you about it.
Which Public Liability Limit You Actually Need Depends On The Job, Not Just The Trade
A sole trader handling small residential jobs can often work with $5 million in cover. Bring builders, councils or commercial clients into the picture and $10 million becomes the real baseline, it’s also the figure most contractor portals are set to accept. Step up again to major commercial work or government tenders and $20 million is usually where the requirement lands. Getting this wrong isn’t just a paperwork problem, it can mean losing the job before you start.
Public And Products Liability Are Usually One Cover, With Two Different Triggers
They’re typically arranged as a single combined section rather than two separate products, but it’s worth understanding what each half actually does. Public liability responds to something happening while you’re on-site, a dropped tool, a client injured during the job. Products liability responds to a problem surfacing after you’ve finished and left, structural failure in a built-in wardrobe, a deck that fails months later. Carpenters doing custom joinery, structural framing or built-in installations carry real exposure on both sides of that line.
Design Input Changes What You Need Beyond Standard Cover
If your work goes beyond physical installation into design advice or site supervision, a builder relying on your specifications, a client trusting your structural judgement, that’s a different kind of claim to physical damage, and standard public liability doesn’t respond to it. Professional Indemnity exists specifically for that gap.

Carpenters Insurance Cover Types Explained
Public Liability Insurance
Protects against claims arising from third-party injuries or property damage due to your work activities. If a passerby trips over materials left on-site and is injured, or your work damages a client’s property, this covers the associated legal and compensation costs.
Products Liability Insurance
Covers a claim arising after the job is finished, if something you’ve built or installed fails and causes injury or damage, structural failure in a deck, a built-in wardrobe collapsing, separate from an on-site incident during the work itself. If you’re doing substantial custom joinery or installation work, our Contract Works Insurance page covers a different gap again, protecting the work itself from damage or theft while it’s still in progress.
Tool and Equipment Insurance
Covers your tools against theft, loss, or accidental damage, allowing you to replace essential equipment without financial strain. Doesn’t extend to tools that break down from normal wear and tear.
Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Covers utes and vans used for work purposes against accidents, theft, or damage, keeping your transport reliable when a vehicle is central to how you actually operate.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Relevant if you provide design input, specifications or site supervision as part of your work, separate from the physical carpentry itself, since a design or specification error is a different kind of claim to physical damage.
Personal Accident and Illness Cover
Replaces income if you’re unable to work due to injury or illness, particularly relevant for sole traders and subcontractors who don’t have workers compensation to fall back on.
Workers Compensation Insurance
Compulsory once you employ staff, covering medical costs and lost wages for an employee injured on the job.
What's Not Covered By Carpenters Insurance?
- Cost of Rectifying Your Own Faulty Work: Fixing the work itself isn’t covered, though damage the fault causes elsewhere may be, under products liability.
- Wear and Tear: Tools breaking down from normal use, not theft or accidental damage.
- Claims by Employees: These sit under Workers Compensation instead.
- Claims Involving a Registered Motor Vehicle: These sit under commercial motor insurance rather than public liability.
- Undeclared Subcontractors or Scope of Work: Work outside what’s been declared to your insurer when the policy was arranged.
- Uninsured Subcontractors: If you engage your own subbies, they need their own ABN and their own insurance, not a ride on yours.
- Injuries Involving Alcohol or Drugs: Standard across virtually all policy types.
- Pre-Existing Conditions: Damage or issues that existed before the policy started.
Do I need insurance if I subcontract for a builder?
Yes. Even working under a builder or head contractor, you can still be liable for accidents or damage caused by your own work. Most sites, and the contractor management portals many of them use, require proof of public liability before you’re allowed to start.
Does tool insurance cover wear and tear?
No, it covers theft, loss and accidental damage, not tools that break down from normal use over time.
What public liability limit do I actually need?
It comes down to the job, not just your trade. A sole trader on small residential work can often get by on $5 million. Once builders, councils or commercial sites are involved, $10 million tends to be the baseline they’ll expect. Larger commercial projects and government tenders push that up again, commonly to $20 million.
Why did a site or portal reject my certificate of currency?
Many builders now use contractor prequalification platforms like Cm3, Pegasus, Felix or Avetta, which check your certificate automatically against what the site requires. If your limit sits below that threshold, access can be delayed or refused before you’ve raised it with anyone directly.
Do I need professional indemnity as a carpenter?
Only if you provide design input, specifications, or site supervision as part of your work, separate from the physical carpentry itself.
If I hire a subcontractor, does my policy cover them?
No. A subcontractor you engage needs their own ABN and their own public liability cover, they aren’t automatically covered under your policy just because they’re working for you.
