Protect Your Car Wash With The Right Insurance
A car wash brings together water, machinery, cash handling and public access, frequently without a staff member present to manage that combination. A self-service bay operating overnight, a coin mechanism holding several days’ takings, and an automatic rollover arm coming into contact with a vehicle: these are ordinary operating conditions for a car wash business, and each one carries genuine exposure if the cover arranged doesn’t reflect it.
Coverscope’s qualified brokers work with car wash owners and operators across Australia, whether a single site or a multi-site operation, arranging cover through the Steadfast network for access to a broader range of wordings and insurers than a single direct insurer can offer, and advocating on your behalf if a claim arises.
What Can It Cover?
The most commonly included cover sections are as follows:
- Public Liability: Injury to customers or the public, most commonly slips on wet surfaces or injury from pressure washing equipment.
- Property Insurance: Covers the building, wash bays, automatic machines, kiosk, and signage against fire, storm, flood and impact.
- Care, Custody and Control: Covers damage you cause to a customer’s vehicle while it’s in your possession.
- Machinery Breakdown: Covers the pumps, motors, and rollover or tunnel equipment the business depends on to trade.
- Business Interruption: Covers lost income and ongoing costs while the site is closed following an insured event.
- Glass Cover: Covers damage to signage, kiosk windows and canopy glazing, a separate exposure from general property damage.
- Money and Theft Cover: Covers coin mechanisms and cash boxes, a known target on unattended sites.

Hand Car Washes and Attended Sites
Where labour is doing the cleaning, employment-related exposures sit alongside the standard risks. Workers’ compensation and management liability become relevant the moment a site has staff, while machinery breakdown is a smaller factor than for automated formats since less is riding on equipment alone.
Self Service and Automated Sites
Self-service, in-bay automatic and conveyor tunnel formats are unmanned for some or all trading hours, which shifts the risk profile toward machinery breakdown, theft of coin mechanisms, and vandalism. Machinery breakdown cover becomes critical the moment a site is automated, since the business generally can’t trade if the wash equipment goes down.

Insurance Solutions for Every Car Wash
Public Liability Insurance
Covers injury to customers or the public, most commonly slips on wet or soapy surfaces, or injury from pressure washing equipment. Limits of $10 million or $20 million are the practical standard, and many landlords or shopping centre leases require it as a condition of occupancy.
Property Insurance
Covers the building, wash bays, automatic machines, kiosk, security fencing, canopy, signage and fitout, against fire, storm, flood and impact.
Machinery and Electronic Equipment Breakdown
Covers the pumps, motors, control panels and rollover or tunnel equipment the business depends on to trade. If an automatic wash goes down, the site generally can’t generate income until it’s repaired.
Business Interruption Insurance
Covers the loss of income and ongoing costs while the site is closed following an insured event or a major equipment failure.
Money and Theft Cover
Coin mechanisms, vending machines and cash boxes are a known target, particularly on unattended sites operating overnight. This cover can extend to cash held in machines outside trading hours.
Cyber Insurance
Increasingly relevant as more sites move to card and app-based payment, replacing coin mechanisms.
What Usually Isn’t Covered?
Exclusions, excesses and limits of liability vary depending on your insurer and site type. Common exclusions include:
- Gradual Pollution: Standard Public Liability typically excludes gradual pollution, ongoing or continuous wastewater discharge, as distinct from a sudden, one-off pollution incident, which can be treated differently depending on the policy. A trade waste approval from your water authority is a legal requirement to discharge wastewater to sewer, separate from the insurance question.
- Wear And Tear: Equipment that was already faulty before the policy started isn’t covered under machinery breakdown.
- Customer Vehicle Damage Without Care, Custody and Control: If this cover isn’t specifically arranged, a scratched or dented customer vehicle may not be covered at all.
- Underinsurance: Cover needs to reflect the cost to replace equipment and rebuild, not the original purchase price or a conservative income estimate
What insurance does a self service car wash need?
At minimum, Public Liability and Property Insurance. Most self service sites also arrange Machinery Breakdown cover for the wash equipment and Money Cover for cash held in coin mechanisms, particularly where the site operates unattended for some or all trading hours.
Does car wash insurance cover damage to a customer's vehicle?
Not automatically. Damage to a customer’s car caused by wash equipment falls under Care, Custody and Control cover, a separate exposure from Public Liability, and it generally needs to be specifically arranged as an extension rather than assumed to be included.
Are unattended or 24-hour car washes harder to insure?
Unattended sites carry a higher theft and vandalism exposure, particularly around cash held in coin mechanisms, but this is factored into how cover is arranged rather than making the site uninsurable.
Do I need environmental or trade waste cover for a car wash?
Most commercial car washes discharging wastewater to sewer require a trade waste approval from their state or regional water authority. Standard Public Liability typically excludes gradual pollution, so operators should discuss environmental liability cover with their broker rather than assuming it’s included.
Can one policy cover a combined car wash, dog wash and truck wash site?
Yes, this is common in Australia and doesn’t need to be arranged as separate policies. Each activity carries a different risk profile, dog wash bays involve animal-related liability exposure, truck wash bays involve larger vehicles and higher-volume wastewater, so it’s worth confirming all activities are specifically declared to your coverscope broker rather than assuming a car-wash-only policy extends to them automatically.
