Essential Covers for Wineries & Vineyards
Spray Drift Is A Real, Costly Risk
Chemical spray drifting from a neighbouring property onto your vines is a genuine liability exposure, not a theoretical one. In 2017, the Supreme Court of Victoria awarded a vineyard owner $7 million in damages after a neighbour’s negligent spraying destroyed his grapevines. Standard general liability cover can exclude pollution-related claims, so spray drift often needs to be specifically addressed as its own cover, on both sides, protecting your vines from someone else’s drift, and covering your own liability if you spray.
Liquor Liability Isn't Automatic
Serving wine at a cellar door creates a distinct liability exposure that general public liability doesn’t always cover. Liquor liability responds to claims linked to alcohol service specifically, and needs to align with your licence conditions and Responsible Service of Alcohol practices. If tastings and cellar door events are part of your business, this is worth confirming as its own line, not assumed to be bundled in.
Stock Value Changes Through The Season
Wine’s insured value isn’t fixed, it rises as grapes move from harvest through fermentation, ageing and bottling. A sum insured set at the start of the season can significantly understate what’s actually at risk once stock is closer to finished, bottled product. Reviewing your stock cover as the vintage progresses matters more than setting it once and leaving it.
Transit And Storage Are Separate Covers
Wine held in your cellar or warehouse and wine being transported to a distributor, export market, or off-site storage facility sit under different sections of a policy. Exporters and distributors in particular need transit cover confirmed separately from stock and vintage cover, since one doesn’t automatically extend to the other.

Winery And Vineyard Insurance Cover Types Explained
Property and Buildings
Fire, storm, flood and vandalism damage to your cellar door, storage sheds, processing facilities and homestead is covered under this section
Crop Protection
Hail, fire, storm damage and certain named diseases affecting your growing vines and fruit sit under this cover, with optional endorsements available if you need vine replacement or trellising included.
Stock and Vintage Cover
As wine moves from crush through barrel or tank ageing to the bottle, its insured value should track that progression rather than stay fixed at an early-season figure, this section is reviewed accordingly, including cover for any period wine is stored off-premises.
Spoilage, Leakage and Contamination
Your wine stock may be at risk during storage, fermentation, bottling, or through pipe or tank failure. This cover protects against accidental product loss, off-flavours, contamination or leaks within your production or storage system.
Public and Product Liability
Public liability responds to an accident on your property, a cellar door visitor injured on the tour or slipping near the crush pad. Product liability is a separate trigger, it responds if someone becomes ill from wine you’ve already sold, weeks or months after it left your premises.
Liquor Liability
If a visitor is over-served at your cellar door and causes harm after leaving, general public liability may not respond, this is specifically what liquor liability covers, and insurers will expect your service practices to align with your licence conditions.
Machinery Breakdown
Covers the repair or replacement cost if a crusher, press, refrigeration unit or irrigation pump fails, but this doesn’t automatically extend to the wine spoiled as a result, that sits under Spoilage cover, a separate trigger responding to a different part of the same loss.
Business Interruption
Replaces lost income and ongoing fixed costs if production or cellar door trade stops, the indemnity period matters most here, a fire during harvest can mean weeks lost at the most critical point in the season, not just the time to repair the damage itself.
Transit and Export Cover
Covers wine moving between your premises, a distributor, or export markets. International shipments carry longer transit times and additional handling, worth confirming your cover extends to export specifically rather than assuming local transit terms apply.
Additional Cover For Vineyard-Specific Risks
Event and Cellar Door Risk Cover for the specific risks of hosting tastings, tours and functions, alongside your standard cellar door liability.
Chemical Drift and Environmental Impacts Sprays, fertilisers or pesticides may drift from neighbouring properties or weather conditions. Some policies include coverage for drift and overspray, others offer an extension for environmental liability.
Professional Indemnity / Contract Services Relevant for contract winemakers and custom crush operations providing advice or processing services to other producers, separate from the liability that responds to your own production.
What's Not Covered?
What’s Not Covered By Winery And Vineyard Insurance?
- Drought: Rarely covered under commercial crop policies in Australia. Parametric insurance is one option worth knowing about if drought is a real exposure for you.
- General Pest and Disease Damage: Excluded unless a specific disease is named in your policy, cover responds to listed perils, not pest or disease loss generally.
- Gradual Deterioration: Normal fermentation character or ageing isn’t an insured event, cover responds to sudden, accidental loss.
- Faulty Winemaking Process: Losses arising from your own production decisions or process errors, rather than an accidental or unforeseen event.
- Employee Theft or Dishonesty: Generally excluded unless specifically extended, separate from third-party theft cover.
