Cover For The Truck, The Boom And The Liability, Together
A concrete pump truck is a major asset working close to structures, powerlines and people, often on sites you don’t control. A boom that clips a balcony while repositioning, a hydraulic failure mid-pour, or over-spray onto a neighbouring property can turn into a claim spanning your vehicle, your plant and your liability cover all at once.
Coverscope arranges insurance for concrete pumping businesses across Australia, built around this specific risk profile. If your business also does general concreting alongside pumping, our Concreters Insurance page covers that side, the two are often arranged together but priced and underwritten differently. If your operations also provide shotcrete or spray-applied concrete, let our team know, we can assist with this risk too.
What Does Concrete Pumping Insurance Cover?
The most commonly included cover sections are as follows:
- Public Liability: Covers injury or property damage caused by your pumping operations, boom contact, a pipeline blowout, or over-spray affecting a neighbouring property, most commercial contracts require $10 million to $20 million in cover.
- Products Liability: Covers a claim from a defect in concrete you’ve placed, generally excluding the cost of rectifying the concrete itself.
- Plant and Equipment / Machinery Breakdown: Covers the pump unit, boom, hoses and outriggers against damage, theft or breakdown, parts are often imported and specialised, so even a relatively minor repair can mean weeks, not days, out of action.
- Commercial Vehicle: Covers your pump truck for damage, theft, or accidents while travelling between sites.
- Business Interruption / Loss of Hire: Covers lost income and the cost of a replacement unit if your pump is out of action following a breakdown or insured event.
- Workers Compensation: Compulsory once you employ staff, covering wages, medical costs and rehabilitation for employees injured on the job.
Who Needs Concrete Pumping Insurance?
- Sole operators running a single trailer pump or small boom pump
- Businesses operating a fleet of boom or line pumps with employed staff
- Concrete pumping businesses working on occupied or unoccupied construction sites
- Operators who rent their pump out to other contractors

Vehicle Or Mobile Plant? The Classification That Decides Your Claim
Whether your unit is rated as a commercial vehicle, registered mobile plant, or both changes how your policy actually responds, and it’s one of the most commonly overlooked details in this trade. A policy rated only on the chassis can leave the mounted equipment, the boom, pump gear and outriggers, uninsured or underinsured, particularly while the unit is stationary and pumping rather than travelling between sites. Disclosing your full configuration, not just the vehicle, is what makes this work properly.
Ground And Outrigger Setup Is Where Overturning Claims Start
Overturning during outrigger setup is one of the most serious claims in this trade, and one of the most preventable, caused by ground failure, uneven surfaces, or positioning too close to an excavation or trench. Insurers expect documented setup procedures and ground assessment as standard practice, not just good habit, and a claim following a rushed or undocumented setup is a genuinely harder conversation than one backed by proper records of what was actually checked on site.
Ageing Booms Are A Genuine, Industry-Wide Underwriting Challenge
A boom pump past its tenth birthday sits in a shrinking pool of insurer appetite, and certain manufacturers have fallen out of favour with some insurers too, this is a real, industry-wide shift, not one company’s arbitrary rule. Boom failure or collapse can cause significant third-party property damage, and repair or part-replacement costs and delays for older or less common equipment can be substantial. Compliance with the relevant safe-use standard, AS 2550.15, matters beyond just helping at placement, failing to keep equipment maintained and certified against it can put a claim at risk of being voided entirely, not just a factor that affects price.
Renting Your Pump Out Creates Its Own Exposure
If you rent your pump to another contractor, damage caused while it’s under their control, or damage the pump itself suffers, can fall back on you as the owner without the right cover in place. This is a distinct exposure from operating your own pump on your own jobs, and it’s worth discussing specifically rather than assuming a standard policy extends to it.

Concrete Pumping Cover Types Explained
Public Liability Insurance
Covers you if your pumping operations cause injury to a third party or damage to their property, boom contact with a structure, a pipeline or hose blowout, a machine toppling from outrigger failure or unstable ground, or over-spray affecting a neighbouring property. This is the cover most site principals will require before you’re allowed to work, most commercial contracts require $10 million to $20 million in cover.
Products Liability Insurance
Covers claims arising from a defect in concrete you’ve placed, if it causes damage after the pour. Policies commonly exclude the cost of rectifying the concrete itself, a pattern consistent across Australian concrete pumping policies generally.
Plant and Equipment / Machinery Breakdown Insurance
Covers the pump unit, boom, hoses and outriggers against damage, theft or breakdown. This matters more for concrete pumping than most trades, since parts are often imported and specialised, and even a relatively minor repair can mean weeks, not days, before you’re back in action.
Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Covers your pump truck for damage, theft, or accidents while travelling between sites, where the unit is mounted on or is itself a registered vehicle.
Business Interruption / Loss of Hire
Covers lost income if your pump is out of action following a breakdown or insured event, including the cost of hiring a replacement unit to keep working.
Workers Compensation Insurance
Compulsory once you employ staff. Covers wages, medical costs and rehabilitation for employees injured on the job, relevant given the physical risks of working around high-pressure hoses and heavy equipment.
What's Not Covered By Concrete Pumping Insurance?
- Cost of Rectifying Defective Concrete: Digging out and removing defective concrete itself isn’t covered, though damage the defect causes elsewhere may be, worth confirming exactly what your policy responds to.
- Damage to Your Own Equipment Under Public Liability: That sits under a separate plant and equipment policy instead.
- Claims by Employees: These sit under Workers Compensation instead.
- Undisclosed Equipment: Additional pump gear, attachments, or hire equipment not disclosed to your insurer.
Is public liability insurance compulsory for concrete pumping businesses in Australia?
It isn’t set by law in all states, but principal contractors and site managers will certainly require it as a condition of working on their site.
Does my policy cover the boom itself, not just the truck?
Only if you’ve told Coverscope the full setup and it’s rated accordingly. Depending on how the unit is classified, commercial vehicle, registered mobile plant, or a combination, the boom, hoses and outriggers may or may not be properly covered, particularly during the pour itself rather than the drive to site.
What happens if I rent my pump to another contractor?
This creates additional exposure from how the renter uses your equipment. It’s worth discussing this specifically rather than assuming your standard policy covers it.
Does this cover shotcrete or spray-applied concrete work?
Shotcrete, slope stabilisation, embankment work, and highway retaining walls carry a different risk profile to standard boom or line pumping into formwork. If your operations also provide shotcrete or spray-applied concrete, let our team know, we can assist with this risk too.
Does my policy cover a breakdown that stops me from working?
Business Interruption or Loss of Hire cover can compensate for lost income and the cost of hiring a replacement unit while yours is being repaired, if you’ve arranged this cover.
